SUMMARY:THE HOLLY JOLLY J BAR CHRISTMAS LIGHT CONTEST: By Dec 16
DESCRIPTION:We had so much fun seeing all the Christmas Light displays that were entered in our contest last year. This year\, we are doing things a little differently! \n\n\n\n\nThe community is still able to submit their votes for their favorite display – the display with the most votes will receive the People’s Choice Award for the contest. SUMMARY:Holiday Trail of Lights
DESCRIPTION:the Holiday Trail of Lights runs from the weekend after Thanksgiving through New Years Day. \nStarting on the east end of Wallace Riddell Park\, thousands of lights create holiday sculptures\, including a picture-perfect lighted tunnel\, ready made for selfies and group photos. On Main and Washington streets\, the Burnet County Courthouse features both static and moving displays. Plus\, there’s the beautifully decorated Christmas tree on the east entrance of the courthouse. Next\, take Jackson Street to Hamilton Creek Park where sparkling lights reflect off of the creek. \nWhile it’s possible to walk the Burnet Trail of Lights\, you might want to consider driving to each location and parking. You can park in the Square\, take in the courthouse\, and then walk to Hamilton Creek Park before or after visiting Wallace Riddell Park.

SUMMARY:Highland Lakes Quilt Guild Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Highland Lakes Quilt Guild presents a trunk show by Gail Hurn\, with many of her splendid quilts from past to present.\nGail Hurn\, a longtime member of Highland Lakes Quilt Guild (HLQG) will show her extensive collection of fine quilts and wall hangings and share her personal quilt journey February 15\, at the First Methodist Church\, 1101 Bluebonnet Dr\, Marble Falls\, TX. Members of the HLQG meet the third Wednesday of each month\, 9AM-noon. Gail learned to sew at the age 10\, when her mother sent her to Singer Sewing School\, but it wasn’t until years later that she made her first bed quilt. Gail was born in Texas and earned a degree in business which took her into teaching\, Instruction Technology\, to junior college students and eventually into teaching the teacher at San Antonio ISD. While living in Philadelphia in the mid 70’s Gail continued her interest in quilting and soon discovered the beauty of handmade Amish quilts. Gail started a cottage business commissioning quilts for her customers. Drawing on her academic background\, combined with her love for quilts\, Gail was soon selling 100’s of quilts. Gail used computer software to design patterns and selecting colors\, sometimes modifying traditional blocks to suit her customer’s wishes. Gail often employed Amish and Mennonite women to make her quilts.\nPlease join us at February’s meeting\, when Gail speaks about her journey with quilts and shares her life’s lessons. Visitors are welcome and new members are highly sought-after. SUMMARY:COTA for Ali's Fight Cook-Off at VFW
DESCRIPTION:A chili cook-off\, dinner\, and silent auction are Feb. 18 from 5 a.m.-2 p.m. at Highland Lakes VFW Post 6974\, located at 1402 Buchanan Drive in Burnet. The event raises money for Ali Thomas\, a 13-year-old Bertram resident fighting kidney failure. Admission is $10; the cook-off registration fee is $30. \nOrganized through the Children’s Organ Transplant Association\, proceeds from the event will help Ali’s family pay for her medical bills. \nInitially diagnosed in September 2021\, Ali’s condition has worsened over the past months\, leading doctors to upgrade her diagnosis to Stage 5 in October and install a dialysis port. \nAfter starting treatment\, doctors noticed that Ali’s body was rejecting the procedure. \n“They found out she had a rare disorder that causes blood clotting\,” said Sandi Hickman\, Ali’s aunt. “She’s had to postpone doing dialysis in order to get the blood clots taken care of.” \nTo fend off harmful clotting\, Ali started receiving daily shots in late November. On Jan. 28\, she received good news from doctors. \n“On Saturday (Jan. 28)\, she was able to go from taking the shots for the blood thinners to taking the oral form\,” Hickman said. “They are hoping to get her back started on dialysis sometime in the next month.” \nEven with the unforeseen medical issues\, Hickman said Ali remains optimistic. \n“She was not liking the shots every day\,” Hickman said. “That was really hard for her. Other than that\, she’s been really positive.” \nHickman hopes the Feb. 18 fundraiser will increase awareness of and support for Ali’s difficult medical journey. \n“We’ve had a lot of people in the community who have really stepped up and are concerned for her\,” Hickman said. “We also find out every week that other people don’t know about it\, so we’re really happy to get the word out about the cookout.” \nInterested chili competitors or anyone wanting to donate to Ali’s cause should visit her COTA page. \nFor event tickets\, call Hickman at 580-279-7020.
